Hearing Loss among Noise-Exposed Workers at Paper Recycling Mill

The aim of this study is to evaluate noise exposure and hearing loss among workers at paper recycling mill and the effects on hearing due to noise at workplace. Workers of a paper recycling mill at middle part of Taiwan were recruited and classified by 4 departments. Questionnaires, environmental noise measurements and Hearing tests were carried out and factors that caused hearing threshold shifts were analyzed. Through 321 questionnaires we found the majority on-site workers were male. Noise levels of on-site departments were higher than 85 dB(A). Although three-, four- or six-distribution methods levels didn't show any difference among departments, 4000 Hz bad ear hearing threshold shifts showed significant difference. After adjusting age, we found the increase of work year, on-site work and work environment noise levels higher than 85 dB(A) made hearing threshold shifts. Using only three-, four- or six-distribution methods as hearing loss indicators will miss the chance of early discovering hearing problems on noise exposed workers. Long-term exposure to high noise levels has induced chronic hearing injury to paper recycling mill workers. We suggest paper recycling mills examine Hearing Conservation Program to avoid advance hearing damage on workers.
