「E-tutor Online Tutoring Learning System」Facilitating Sex Education Program among 10-12 year-old Aboriginal School Children

Background and Purpose: In recent years, sexual conduct is gradually being regarded as common behavior in the course of the natural developmental process. However, sexual conduct at a young age is usually accompanied by increased health risks, in turn, being treated as problematic behavior. In coordination with the School Health Promotion Action Research Project from the Ministry of Education, this study adopts the E-tutor online learning system as the foundation, introduces sexual education-related issues, and assesses the performance of the project implementation. It develops the "E-tutor Online Tutoring Learning System" to promote sexual education, in order to foster proper sexual knowledge, attitude, and life skills among senior students at primary schools, achieving the aim of self-protection. Methodology: This study adopts the quasi-experimental research method and conducts a survey via questionnaires. The participating subjects are a total 31 senior students from two aboriginal primary schools of Nantou County. One primary school is designated the "Online Learning Group", given an internet learning course of 4 weeks, while the other primary school is designated the "Traditional Learning Group". The "Primary School Sexual Education Learning Condition Questionnaire" provided by Xingling Medical Foundation is adopted as the pre and post assessment tool for the action research on the students, to fully assesses the effectiveness of the Internet courses. Results: The results show that: (1) The introduction of the course to the "Online Learning Group" improves the scoring on the sexual attitude of puberty adaptation and AIDS, while the "Traditional Learning Group" has a lowered scoring on both gender roles and AIDS afterwards. After the online learning course, the students show a general increase in scores in the post-assessment, and their sexual attitude showed a positive change, especially in "AIDS attitude" category. (2) The introduction of the course to the "Online Learning Group", significantly increase the correct rate of proper knowledge regarding AIDS, sexual harassment, and sexual abuse, while the "Traditional Learning Group" only shows an increase in the category of AIDS. After the online learning course, the "Online Learning Group" have an average correct rate of 84% or above on 80% of the questions, while the "Traditional Learning Group" shows only 20%.(3) As for the status of the two groups of students in responding to the questions, it shows that the teacher of the Online Learning Group established the best atmosphere for interactions with the students, while the weakest link was the diverse-evaluation portion. Conclusion: The "Online Learning Group" shows a positive change in sexual attitudes and knowledge. The reforming E-tutor Online Tutoring Learning System can promote interactions between teachers and their students and increase the correct rate in sexual knowledge in aboriginal primary school students. In the future, online learning is planned for the other aboriginal primary schools to conduct sexual education, and to improve learning effectiveness gradually.
