Exploring Intermediate Learners' Use of Two Corpus Tools in a Contextualized Lexical Translation Task

過去的研究顯示語料庫對於外語的教與學極具價值,然而有關中等程度學習者如何使用語料庫的研究目前仍然相當有限。本研究探討中等程度學習者利用語料庫工具回答翻譯填充題的成效與限制。本文所研究的三個問題分別為(1)在使用語料庫工具的情形下,中等程度學習者對於翻譯填充題的作答表現如何?(2)中等程度學習者如何使用TotalRecall雙語關鍵詞上下文檢索程式以及Tango搭配語檢索程式?(3)中等程度的學習者在使用語料檢索工具時所遭遇到的困難為何?共有29位中低程度至中等程度的大學外文系的學生參與本研究的實驗。本研究利用前後測、檢索記錄、問卷調查、學生團體訪談等資料的分析獲得結論。我們將受試者根據他們大學學測英文成績分成三組。研究顯示學生在語料庫工具的協助下,後測的平均分數顯著增加,此外不同程度者在使用語料庫工具作答時有不同的表現,這可以從他們檢索Tango的次數、錯誤的類型與數量、以及前後測分數的關連性等質性和量化證據得到佐證。本研究對理論所隱含的意義在文中亦有討論。

The use of corpora in language learning and translation has become an important research topic over the past decade. While previous studies have shown the value of corpora in language learning and translation, few studies have investigated the actual use of corpus tools by lower level learners. This study aims to explore the potentials and limitations of the TotalRecall Chinese-English bilingual concordancer and the Tango English collocation retrieval system by intermediate learners in a contextualized lexical translation task. Three research questions are addressed: (1) How well do intermediate learners perform in a lexical translation task with the two corpus tools? (2) How do they actually use the two tools to solve lexical translation problems? and (3) What difficulties do they encounter? A case study was conducted in which 29 college students majoring in English at a Taiwanese university participated. Based on their scores in the college entrance exams, the subjects were classified into the three groups of G1, G2, and G3, whose levels ranged from lower-intermediate to intermediate. A pre-test, post-test, query log analysis, surveys, student group interviews, and students' online feedback were adopted as instruments. The results show that the students performed significantly better with the aid of the two corpus tools and that learners of different proficiency levels exhibited qualitatively and quantitatively different patterns in their query strategies, errors, and correlations between scores in the pre-test and post-test. The implications of the study are discussed at the end of the paper.
