七零年代初臺灣現代詩的學院批評-評價顏元叔與《中外文學》的批評實踐與爭議

Academic Criticism of Modern Taiwan Poetry in the Early 1970s-Evaluation on the Critical Practice and Controversy of Yen Yuan-shu and Chung Wai Literary Quarterly

摘要


學者對顏元叔批評的既定共識,是在臺灣現代詩批評中使用新批評方法,並從傳統印象式批評另闢出「學院式」的批評路徑。本文將爬梳顏元叔的實際批評與文學理論,並參照周邊史料,廓清顏氏詩歌批評的具體創造、其批評所欲對話的詩史問題;從這個基礎上理解顏元叔,進一步,探討顏元叔引起的爭議,以及學院派刊物《中外文學》所提供的對話空間,是如何在觀念變動,世代衝突劇烈的七零年代詩史,產生直覺/理性、前行代/新世代、西化/民族的觀念對話。本文將分兩個部分討論,前半處理顏元叔批評的內部構造,後半向外聚焦在爭議和論戰空間。合而觀之,找出顏元叔在詩史變動中的具體位置,以及學院批評在七零年代初的時代意義。

The established consensus among scholars on Yen Yuan-shu's criticism is the employment of New Criticism on Taiwan's modern poetry and the introduction of an "academic" criticism as distinct from the traditionally impressionistic criticism. This paper combs through Yen Yuan-shu's criticism and literary theory, and, based on historical materials, clarifies the specific creativeness in Yen's poetry criticism and the poetic history issues addressed in his criticism. Explorations will also be made into how the space provided by Chung Wai Literary Quarterly gave rise to the conceptual dialogue between intuition and rationality, between former generation and new generation, and between westernization and nationality, in the poetic history of the 1970s, when conceptual changes and cross-generation conflicts were drastic. Discussions will be divided in two parts: the first part deals with the internal structure of Yen Yuan-shu's criticism, and the second part focuses on the arena of controversy and debate. Attempts are made to define the specific position of Yen Yuan-shu in the changing flow of poetry history and the significance of the academic criticism in the early 1970s.
