邁向二十一世紀大學通識教育的新境界：從普及到深化

摘要

本文主張在最近18年來通識教育的重要性普遍獲得肯定，通識教育課程在各大學校園普遍實施的基礎之上，台灣的大學院校應經由全校課程結構的改革、個別課程的設計與內容的創新等途徑，而提昇通識課程教學的深度與高度。本文寫作的目的，在於分析大學通識教育「從普及到深化」的新方向所涉及的各種問題。本文第二節首先探討大學通識教育的現況，並釐清所謂「深化」一詞的涵義。第三節分析二十一世紀大學通識必須力求「深化」的理由。第四節闡釋深化大學通識教育的具體策略。第五節指出結論性的看法。
「從普及邁向深化」這個新方向，可以使通識教育發揮教育的本質性作用，一方面矯治現代大學教育中知識的「自我異化」之弊病，另一方面也可以厚植學生「終身學習」的基礎能力。為了推動理想的高品質的通識教育課程，我們建議教育部以專款推動地區性教學發展中心之設立，以累積通識教育相關資料，並提昇教學品質。另外，邀請教學研究卓然有成的學者，開授通識教育講座課程，既可以對治許多學校師資不均衡之問題，也可以達到師資共享之目的，可謂一舉兩得。當然，持續辦理教學研討會，研發優質課程，創新教學方法，更是一項永續的改革工作。

This paper suggests that the new direction of university general education in twenty-first-century Taiwan lies in the restructuring of the university-wide curriculum, the re-designing of individual general education courses, and the renovating of course content. After explaining the new perspective in the first section, we discuss in the second section the current situation of general education in Taiwan's colleges and universities.
Section three analyzes further the necessity for the enhancement and renovation of the general-education curriculum. In section four, we suggest some pedagogical strategies to enhance general education. In the final section We conclude by saying that the reform of general education is the catalyst for transformation of higher education in Taiwan in the twenty-first century.
