Effects of Electroacupuncture and Ear Points Pressing on Exercise Induced Blood Lactate Responses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of electroacupuncture and ear point pressing on exercise induced blood lactate responses. Subjects were eighteen university males with average age, height and weight of 22.88 yrs, 174.13cm and 72.1kgs respectively. Each subject performed four separate 12-minute treadmill runnings of 80% maximal oxygen consumption with treatments of electroacupuncture locus, ear point pressing, electroacupuncture pseudo locus and with no stimulation. Electroacupuncturestimulate was applied on Hoh Ku(Li4)and Tsu San-Li(S-36)locus while pseudo-electroacupuncturestimulate was applied on two centimeters outside the points of electroacupuncturelocus. Electrical stimulate (12V, 30Hz) was induced by a WQ-6F electroacupuncturemachine and ear point stimulate was pressed by using ”emplantingseeds” on lung points, liver points, heart points and endocrine points during 20th-25thand 5th-10th minutes before exercise, and 5th-15th minutes post exercise. Data were collected and analyzed with one-way repeated ANOVA. The results obtained from this study revealed that both electroacupuncture and ear point pressing significantly lowered recovery blood lactate and rate of perceived exertion following exercise. The results also indicated that ear point pressing is more beneficial to recover from fatigue following severe exercise than electroacupuncture.
