Predicting VO2max in Boys Age 11-12 Years Using Field Tests of Cardiorespiratory Fitness

摘要

To develop prediction equations for estimating VO2max we recruited all the 6thgrade male students, age 11-12 years (n=165, group 1) of Chung-Shao Elementary School in Taipei county for the study. All subjects underwent the following measurements: 800m run/walk test (RWT), 3-minute bench step test(BST), heart rate (HR), blood pressure(BP), skinfold thickness(SF), height(HT), weight(WT), and body mass index (BMI), which were used as the independent variables. A subgroup of 38 sujects (group 2) were randomly selected from group 1 for a maximal treadmill test for obtaining VO2max which was used as the dependent variable. The subjects underwent the above measurements twice on 2 different days. Stepwise multiple regression analysis, correlation coefficient and t-test were employed to analyze the results. Total error (TE) and coefficient of variation (CV) of the developed prediction equations were calculated. The results show that: 1. the RWT and BST have a test-retest reliability of 0.87 & 0.45(p<0.05), respectively; 2. WT, BMI, SF, systolic BP (SBP), peak HR, and RWT were closely associated with (p<.05) measured VO2max; 3. no difference between group 1 and 2 was observed for all the above anthropometric and physiological measurements; 4. 13.3% of these children have high normal blood pressure or hypertension; and 5. the following factors were strong predictors of VO2max:subscapular SF, SBP, and RWT score. This prediction equation for estimating VO2max has a multiple R=0.85, adjusted R^2=0.69, TE=4.47 ml•kg^(-1)•min^(-1), and CV=8.5%. We concluded that: 1. the developed prediction equation using 800m WRT is accurate and applicable to other populations of similar age and gender; and 2. the 800m RWT is superior in test-retest reliability and has a higher correlation with VO2max than the 3-minute BST.
