本研究抽取客家人口密度高之客語生活學校10所,針對該校各年級進行集體面訪,研究對象共有1800人。深入調查分析學童客語習得與使用情形,發現客語生活學校之國小學童,有55.4%的表示會聽客語,能完全聽得懂客語者有僅佔23.7%,有49.8%的表示會說客語,非常會說客語者有16.1%,學童與兄弟姐妹及同學交談則幾乎皆是以普通話溝通,學童與祖父母交談主要使用的語言是客語佔46.1%,普通話佔31.1%,與父母交談使用客語的比例偏低僅23.3%是客語傳承的一項警訊,學童間語言溝通以使用普通話者最多有91.0%,其次為客語5.9%,而老師於下課時間較常用普通話與學童溝通(87.6%),其次為客家話,用其他語言溝通的比例均小於1%。進一步檢定發現客語能力老師於下課時間用何種語言與學童講話跟學童的客語能力有顯著的相關性。
