The objective of this research was to make a further evaluation on the effects of fan speed on drying rate, drying quality, and electricity consumption during kiln drying of wood. 1-speed(rpm=1000) and 3-speed(green~35% M. C., rpm=1000; 35%~20% M. C., rpm=600; 20%~final percentage M. C., rpm=300)fan motors were used for this study. The test material was 3 cm×15 cm×160 cm Machilus zuihoensis. The results of this study indicate that: 1. Neither the drying rate nor drying quality were reduced or degraded by using a 3-speed fan motor system. 2. The electrical power consumption of the circulation system was reduced by more than 21% by using the 3-speed fan motor system, and the energy consumption of the heating system was also reduced a great deal by 3-speed fans.
