The purpose of this survey is to understand tree farmer& response to the current revised private forest afforestation awards program (RPFAAP) which was issued by the government in 1996. The program provides government cost-sharing with private landowners for tree planting. A total of 134 tree farmers throughout the island was chosen to seek their responses. The results show that a majority of farmers (81.6%) were aware of the program, yet 58.3% of them expressed the view that the awards were not enough. The results also show that only 9.2% of farmers expressed willingness to participate. However, the cost-share levels that a farmer can earn for tree planting under RPFAAP reached as high as 92.3% and 69.6% as compared with the mean and median estimated afforestation costs, respectively. Since the program has been executed for only I yr, a longer time period is required to accurately assess the actual results.
