Originating in China nearly 5,000 years ago, acupressure has been one of the oldest forms of healing known to mankind. Acupressure involves application of a gentle finger pressure at specific points (acupoints) along the meridians. It replaces the use of needles, as practiced in acupuncture. This paper offers a definition of acupressure, a brief exploration of the philosophical and theoretical background of acupressure, identification of acupoints, technique of acupressure, and the cautionary considerations. Acupressure seems to be a safe, easy to learn, simple to use, economical, effective, and natural method of health care. Also, acupressure, once learned, is more accessible than most present medical techniques. The only tools required are practitioners fingers, knowledge, and concentration. Acupressure gives patients choice of a complementary method of treatment to supplement standard therapies, and can be independently practiced by nurses as a nursing technique to expend nurses' contributions in health care.
