This article analyzed the concept of powerlessness according to the procedures presented by Walker and Avant (1995). A definition of powerlessness, attributes and examples of powerlessness, and differentiation from other relative concepts are presented. Findings reveal that patients in clinical settings who have acute and chronic diseases or terminal illnesses often experience powerlessness. Not only does powerlessness effect their quality of life, it can also cause deterioration of their condition and even death. The damage to the patient who experiences powerlessness is more severe than the disease itself. Feeling powerless can be equated with the saying: ”It is a sad heart that never rejoices.” The aim of this analysis is to provide nurses with an accurate conception of powerlessness and with a broader view of implications for clinical application.
