Investigating the Effect of Environmental Context and Number of Stations on Bike-Sharing Usage

The present study aims to examine the rental demand of the Taipei YouBike system; particularly, we make an attempt to identify the effects of environmental context and station networks on the YouBike demand patterns. The YouBike data from January 2015 to March 2016 were collected; the borrowing and returning volumes of stations were separately investigated with multiple and multilevel regression. The empirical results showed that the area of commercial and residential land uses and neighborhoods or community parks were positively related to the rental volumes of YouBike stations while winter rainfalls exhibited a negative association. Bike lanes also showed a positive association with the rental volumes only if their length was sufficient. The study provides insights about the relative importance of land use, bike infrastructure, weather and station networks to bike-sharing usage in Taipei. The findings may help bike-sharing operators to improve their system operations and increase the sustainability of the bike-sharing system.
