The article examines geopolitical competition between the United States and Russia within the international information sphere, jostling for position and advantage in a war of words, the particular occasion chosen to be examined is the 'Russian' proposal that came after the use of chemical weapons in August 2013 in Syria. This occasion marked a brief moment in time of intense communication and competition as it was simultaneously a threat and an opportunity for both sides. Both sides used a competing set of values and norms against one another, which attempted to project the context of one good side (the 'us') that was defending the interests of the wider international community against the other bad side (the 'them') that was working against the interests of mankind and humanity. This informational geopolitical struggle was observable in the different international publications that appeared in English language on the subject. The strategic messages of the United States seem to support the policy of regime change (to remove Assad from power) and Russian messages support their national objective of maintaining the political power status quo.
