Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) techniques have been show to be a predictable therapy for periodontal regeneration in certain kinds of periodontal bony defects. Premature exposure of the barrier happens commonly. Exposed barriers undergo bacterial adhesion and penetration, which cause wound infection and may jeopardize the wound healing. Therefore, GTR combined with the local antibiotics therapy may resolve the infection problem. The methods of using local antibiotics include irrigation、gel application and antibiotics incorporated on barrier membranes. The purpose of this article is to discuss the effect of combined use of barrier membranes and local antibiotics in the GTR procedure.
