Chitin is second only to cellulose as the most abundant natural biopolymer. It is an important structural component of the exoskeleton of invertebrates and is a very stable polysaccharide. Chitosan is a derivative of chitin made by treating is with hot strong alkali which results in abundant deacetylation of side chains. Chitin and chitosan have various biological effects such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, activation of host defense to prevent infection, acceleration of wound healing and so on. It is potentially a new regenerative materials that will be discussed in this paper.
