Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is the conscientious and explicit use of current best evidence in making decisions for the care of individual patients. EBM is the integration of the available research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values. The application of evidence-based medicine includes 5 steps: (1) asking a clear question; (2) searching for the information; (3) appraising the evidence; (4) apply to the patient, and (5) assessing the performance. EBM also develops 4 ”S” principles in the order of evidence level-system, synopses, syntheses, studies, which help practitioners to find the best information efficiently. Keeping pace with the fast advanced dentistry and being able to manage patients who have complex needs is a challenge for dentists. EBM provides a way to teach the practice of medicine and to improve the skills of the clinicians efficiently, which is a new paradigm for medical practice.
