Morphological variations of the mandibular molars may affect dental treatment plans and the prognosis after treatment. Most previous studies were been based on Western populations. Recent studies targeting the dental morphology of Asians have shown that unique morphological variations are presented in Asians. These morphological variations include a higher prevalence of mandibular first molar with a disto-lingual root and of mandibular second molar with a C-shaped root, compared to those in Western countries. These morphological variations will have an impact on endodontic and periodontal treatment planning and patient prognosis. This article provides a review of the current literature and describes the morphological characteristics of mandibular molars with a disto-lingual root and with a C-shaped root. This information can be used to pinpoint areas that need to be taken into the consideration in relation to endodontics and periodontics.
