The purposes of this study were to explore the types, prevalence, and duration of somatic symptoms during in vitro fertilization technology treatment using a retrospective survey in a medical center in northern Taiwan. With purposive sampling, 48 women who had completed one in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle were recruited. The instruments were structured and semi-structured questionnaires were used. The results showed the types and the prevalence of the symptoms were: abdominal distension 70.8%, breast engorgement 64.6%, abdominal pain 47.9%, nausea 33.3%, faintness 22.9%, diarrhea 22.9%, ascites 16.7%, vaginal bleeding 16.7%, vomiting 10.4%, and others 10.4%. These results suggest that the medical team should provide an instruction brochure for IVF patients before treatment, and closely monitor the physical change during the treatment cycle.
