This research investigated the practice choices of government scholarship sponsored physicians after they had fulfilled their service obligation. It also evaluated the influence of government allocation policy on choices and distribution of practice locations and specialties. The study subjects consisted of 399 physicians who received government funding during their medical education years and were obliged to serve in accordance with the rules set by the Ministry of Education and the Department of Health. A self-administered questionnaire was delivered to the 399 study subjects. A total of 141 valid questionnaire responses were obtained, a 35.3% response rate. The content of the questionnaire included demographic information, current practice location and specialties, as well as the practice locations and training obtained during obligatory service. Analysis of the data found no statistically significant relation among the variables of sex, medical school, marital status, resident location before high school and the current practice location and specialty among the study subjects. However, the choices of current location and specialty were significantly related to their training experience during the service obligation period. Those who had primary care service experience and those had service experience at non-metropolitan areas were more inclined to practice in non-metropolitan areas. These results of this study also suggest that future research in the practice choices of other public funding educated physicians is needed. (Full Text in Chinese)
