Report on the 2004 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Medical College

The 115th Annual Meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) was held on November 5-10, 2004 in Boston. The AAMC is a nonprofit association representing all accredited U.S. and Canadian medical schools, major teaching hospitals, and scientific societies. Through these institutions and organizations, the AAMC represents thousands of faculty members, medical students, and resident physicians. This annual meeting is regard as the United States premier meeting for leaders in academic medicine. The theme of this years meeting was ”Fulfilling the Promise, Tomorrow's Doctors, and Tomorrow's Cures.” In addition to three plenary sessions, there were six focus sessions made up of Teaching Clinical Skills, Partnerships in International Medical Education. Transforming Academic Settings to Provide Authentic Patient Centered Care. Health Services to Communities, and two sessions aimed at helping the entry of racial and ethnic minority students into careers in the health professions. According to the Secretarial Office, 3604 persons attended this meeting, 98% from United States and Canada. Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China all had one attendee. This report summarizes several selected topics that were thought relevant to curriculum reform in Taiwan, namely, Professionalism, Reinvigorating the Educational Mission. Medical School Preparation for LCIVIE (Liaison Committee on Medical Education) Accreditation, Teaching of Clinical Skills, Technical Skill Requirements for Third Year Clerkships, Patient Care Information Exchange in the Era of Duty Hours, and International Medical Education. It is author's belief that medical education has becoming a sub-specialty in US medical schools. Because teaching, one of the three missions for a medical school, has been increasingly threatened recently, a structural remedy that reinvigorates this most important mission seems mandatory worldwide.
