A Retrospective Study of Performance Comparing Medical Students at Chung Shan Medical University Recruited by Recommendation and by Joint Entrance Examination

摘要

We enrolled in this study a total of 150 medical students who had been admitted from 1999 to 2004 to study at Chung Shan Medical University; 75 of these students were recruited by Recommendation (RE) and the other 75 were recruited through the Joint University Entrance Exam (JE). The number and sex ratio of each grade of JE group were randomly selected to correspond to the RE group. The aim of the study is to investigate the academic performance and behavior differences between the RE and JE groups; in addition, we designed a questionnaire for students. The questionnaire encompassed four aspects: (1) motivation for entering medical school, (2) problems with the curriculum and other learning difficulties, (3) the annoyances of medical school life, (4) enthusiasm for participating in community activities or class, and (4) future career goals. Our data revealed that, in general, the academic success of the two groups of students showed no significant difference; however, the overall performance of the RE group students was better in terms of community activity and class participation. We found that medicine school would not be the students' choice if they had the opportunity to reconsider for 19.6% of the JE group. This contrasted with 5.5% of the RE group (p<0.05). This would seem to indicate that a significant number of the JE group students found that medical school did not fit their present inclinations and interests. Our findings support the idea that interviews or another type of multiple-channel entrance admission education program is the correct approach to admission. However, we would like to highlight the following interesting findings that deserve further investigation. Firstly, the RE group paid more attention to academic subjects, and came under more pressure when taking the National Licensure Examination. Secondly, a higher proportion of the JE group students were bothered by the presence of ”high expectations from their family”. Finally, a higher proportion of RE group students committed themselves to a future in medical teaching and research.
