Purpose: Computer-simulated devices are becoming popular as part of laparoscopy training. The aim of this study was to evaluate the transferability of skills learned from simulated instruments. Methods: Ten students (group A) practiced laparoscopic skills using a computer- simulator (Lapmentor), while another ten students (group B) were allowed to watch only. Both groups then performed the cholecystectomy procedure in training boxes using a gallbladder model. The procedures were recorded by DVD recorder and evaluated by two independent experienced surgeons. Results: The group A students took less time for the operation, had fewer gallbladder perforations and/or cystic duct/artery injuries, and had a higher overall performance score than tile group B students. Conclusion: Computer simulated training was effective in this study. This kind of training should be able to reduce the need to use training boxes.
