Testing a Suicide Prevention Course Designed for Community Medicine Residents

並列摘要

Objective: Suicide is a worldwide public health issue, and physicians are major gatekeepers for suicide prevention. The Taiwan Suicide Prevention Center (TSPC) developed a Suicide Prevention Course in Community Medicine, to be taught as part of the Postgraduate Year Training Program (PGYTP) at local hospitals. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of this training course. Methods: Trainees who attended the PGYTP were asked to complete a post-course questionnaire, including a written examination based on the information presented during the course, and an outcome survey for the course. The data were analyzed according to the structure and design of PGYTP. Results: During 2012, 286 trainees completed the full course and filled out the post-course questionnaire. The course satisfaction rating was high; however, the cognitive perspective was less desirable, especially at the knowledge level. The trainees expressed high willingness to apply suicide prevention skills and tools in their clinical practices. Conclusions: The trainees reported that the suicide prevention course was very satisfactory and helpful. However, refining the lecture method and course contents could make delivery of the suicide prevention information more effective. In addition, overcoming geographical barriers by adopting distance learning technology or by rearranging the existing manpower for tutorials might allow more trainees to participate in future programs.
