Feasibility of Veteran Standardized Patients as Trainers of Standardized Patients

Purpose: Due to an insufficient number of medical staff standardized patient (SP) trainers, the objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of training veteran SPs as SP trainers. Methods: Nine medical staff members from four different medical specialties, and four veteran SPs attended an SP trainer workshop in November 2014. After finishing the workshop, a newly recruited SP was assigned to each medical staff and veteran SP for scenario training. Four different scenarios within the aforementioned specialties were written for SP training; in each scenario, the training was conducted by one instructor and one veteran SP. The performance of all SPs was evaluated by their trainers, other SP trainers, and the instructor of the specific scenario, using a 10-item rating scale, with 3-point rating (0-2 points) for each item. We used an independent samples t-test for comparison of SPs' performance trained by medical staff s and veteran SPs. Results: The performance total score (mean ± SD) for the SPs trained by medical staff (18.8 ± 1.8) was not significantly different than those trained by veteran SPs (17.8 ± 2.0). Nine out of ten items on the performance rating scale were not significantly different between groups. Conclusions: Our data suggest that veteran SPs can serve as SP trainers to address the shortage in medical staff SP trainers.
