The Use of the Mini-CEX in Occupational Therapy Postgraduate Year Training Programs in Taiwan

摘要

The Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX) has been adopted in occupational therapy (OT) post-graduate year (PGY) training programs in Taiwan. Purpose: We investigated the experience of OT supervisors with the Mini-CEX for PGY training programs in Taiwan. Methods: The online survey was distributed to OT supervisors who ran PGY training in Taiwan. The survey comprised five sections: demographic information, experiences with using Mini-CEX, the ease of using the Mini-CEX in rating the clinical performance of PGY OT trainees, and advantages and disadvantages of the Mini-CEX. The responses were based on a 5-point Likert scale for experiences with using Mini-CEX and the ease of using the Mini-CEX in rating the clinical performance of PGY OT trainees. A total of 86 surveys were returned, and 77 were analyzed. Results: Over 70% of supervisors agreed that time was sufficient when using the Mini-CEX. More than 63.6% of supervisors agreed that personnel support was sufficient (63.6%-74% agreed), except that only 27.3% agreed they "felt no pressure" in using it. An estimated 67.5% of OT supervisors agreed on the match between the Mini-CEX and the training goals, 61% to 76.6% agreed that the Mini-CEX benefited the competence training, depending on the types of competence skills, 66.2% agreed that the Mini-CEX judged the performance fairly, and 74% agreed it is objective. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that OT supervisors perceived the Mini-CEX as a useful education and assessment tool for PGY training programs. Further training on consistent scoring criteria on Mini-CEX is needed.
