Experimental plots using the wastewater from electro-plating shop as irrigation water were located at Chia-Li tributary of the East-West stream No.2, in Changhua county, where there were many electro-plating shops. The concentrations of Ni, Zn, Cr, and Cu, especially for Ni in the stream-water were sometimes higher than the values regulated by the Irrigation Water Quality Criteria. Some water analytical data were even higher than those suggested by the Effluent Quality Criteria. Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the sediments from the stream were high as well. The 0.IM HCl extractable amount of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn in the surface soil (0-15 cm) of the irrigation land were much greater than those in the subsoil (16-30 cm). They also were higher than the recommended controlling values, or reached the class 5 of the Quantity Criteria for Heavy Metals in Soils, which was considered toxicity. The total quantity of heavy metals extracted by aqua regia had the similar tendency in distribution and concentration. This great soil contamination might be attributed to the long-term feeding of heavy metals. It indicated that the cumulative heavy metals in the soils of irrigation area have been overloading.
