Background. The treatment of breast cancer primarily involves surgery combined with chemotherapy and radiation. Hormone preparations and cytotoxic agents are supplemental therapies. Howerer, many patients-do not fully comply with therapy out of fear of the drugs' side effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the compliance and behavior of patients with breast cancer during chemotherapy. Methods. The study enrolled 391 patients from January 1997 trough May 1999. The binomial variable method was used to explain observed χ2 test values. Results. The results showed that: the' compliance of patients to chem.<:,therapy prescribed by their physicians was 30.7% (p < 0.05), and the rate of noncompliance was 32.2% (p < 0.05); furthermore, discontinued chemotherapy due to side effects was 38.6%, (p > 0.05), but the rate of patients who temporarily discontinued chemotherapy was 27.2%. In addition, the related factors which influenced patients with breast cancer included metastases, 44.8%, physicians' orders, 29.4% (p < 0.05), insurance costs, 96.6%, and family support, 23.6%. Social relationship factors, such as physicians, concern for their patients, were noted in 85% of patients. The price of chemotherapy was expensive, ranging from NT$6,984 to 44,456 for eight cycles. We think the results of this study show a reference to case payments according to patient compliance with the orders of the physicians. Conclusions. In conclusion, breast cancer patients have close relationship with physical factors development. There are many for the patients, for example the medical side effects, physicians relations, and effectiveness. We found that a good patient-physician relationship, and commumication will lead to higher compliance rates
