Hypertension in Middle-Aged Taiwanese Adults

中年人高血壓症及其相關因子

摘要

Objectives. Hypertension is a relatively common disorder in Taiwan. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between hypertension and its related factors in middle-aged Taiwanese adults. Methods. This was a cross-sectional survey conducted in May 1998. All employees aged 40 to 64 working for the Taiwan provincial government in Chung-Hsing Village were invited to participate in this study. Only 709 volunteers completed the blood tests. Fasting blood biochemistry was investigated to determine the factors related to hypertension. Subjects were considered to have hypertension if the average of three sphygmomanometer readings exceeded 140 mmHg systolically and/or 90 mmHg diastolically, or subjects had a history of hypertension. The results were analyzed by the t test, the chi-square test and multiple logistic regression. Results. The 709 volunteers comprised 425 women (60.0%) and 284 men (40.0%) and had a mean age of 50.5 years (standard deviation: 6.9). The mean systolic blood pressure was 120.9 19.3 mmHg in women and 123.3 19.3 mmHg in men (p = 0.095). The mean diastolic blood pressure was 77.6 11.9 mmHg in women and 80.7 13.0 mmHg in men (p = 0.001). The overall prevalence of hypertension was 27.2% (25.7% in women and 29.6% in men, p = 0.286). The prevalence of hypertension increased with age (p = 0.001). After controlling for the other covariates, multivariate logistic regression showed that odds ratios were considerably higher for the following related factors: increasing age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02 1.07, p < 0.001), obesity (OR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.06 2.67, p < 0.05), hypertriglyceridemia (OR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.15 2.43, p < 0.01) and hyperuricemia (OR = 1.80, 95% CI = 1.26 2.58, p < 0.01). Conclusions. The prevalence of hypertension was surprisingly high in middle-aged Taiwanese adults and indicated the importance of measuring blood pressure periodically. Other metabolic disorders should also be screened during intervention of hypertension.
