In 1993, Germany responded to the economic and political challenges posed by the changes in Asia by drawing up a ”Conception of Asia (Asien-Konzept)” for the future development of the EU's relations with Asian countries. It adopted, in the spirit of the ”new Asia strategy” endorsed by the German parliament (Bundestag), a Communication on a long-term policy toward Asian countries that has served the EU well, providing a useful roadmap for the future. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the background of Germany's ”new Asia strategy”, my empirical study will also deal with Germany's policy toward Asia in the 2lth century by interpreting the contents of ”Asian-Konzept”.
