Changes in Outcome among Very Low Birth Weight Infants at One NICU

並列摘要

Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the neonatal outcome among very low birth weight (VLBW) (<1500 g) infants delivered at Taichung Veterans General Hospitaland to document the changes in mortality and selected morbidities over time. Methods: The perinatal dataset was collected from May 1999 to January 2006. Standard definitions were used to record perinatal events. Results: In total, 289 VLBW infants were included in this study. Mean birth weight was 1069.0 ± 264.3 gand mean gestational age was 28.8 ± 2.8 weeks. The overall survival rate was 78.2%. The majority of deaths occurred within the first three days of life. The limits of viability were 24 weeks’ gestation and 550 g birth weight. The number of infants with a birth weight less than 750 gm significantly decreased in the second time period of the study (2003-2006). The incidence of BPD, late onset sepsis and ROP decreased throughout the two study periods (1999-2006). Conclusion: There was a trend toward a decreased incidence of BPD, late onset sepsis and all ROP throughout the two study periods. These trends might be due to advances in perinatal/neonatal care and other undetected factors. Birth weight was significantly correlated with mortality rate and BPD.
