The aim of this study is to understand the relationship between the oral hygiene knowledge, attitude, practice (K. A. P.) and oral condition of university students in Kaohsiung City. The addition of the oral hygiene courses in the college or university for students in the future was also investigated. Data were colleted by questionnaire and oral examination and analyzed. The result of this study showed that the suited subjects included 54% males, 46% females. The percentage students of Literature College, Philosophy College and Medical College were 23.5%, 19.4% and 57. 1% respectively. There were 23.6% students have fixed opposite sex friends. 27.3% students had the experiment to dental clinic in the last three month, and 84.1 % students will visit dentist when having the troubles of teeth. The college students' oral hygiene knowledge (K) was fair with a mean (SD) score of 12.54(2.34) (total score is 16). Oral hygiene attitude (A) was not aggressive with mean (SD) score of 25.08 (9.02) (total Score is 46). Oral hygiene practice (P) was bad with mean (SD) score of 9.90 (2.11) (total score is 17). The K.A.P. of dental in the medical university is better than the other university students suggesting the effectiveness of the dental education. The correlation analysis of the oral hygiene K.A.P., indicated that the scores of males are lower than females, especially significantly different in the A. and P. scores. The K. and P. scores of the medical university students are obviously higher than the college of science. The college students of liberal arts are higher in A. score. Besides, those who has positive attitude about opposite sex friend, visits dentist when any oral sign or syndrome occurs, dental check up every half year routinely periodically, and have oral hygiene instruction information provided by the clinic have higher K. A. P. scores than the negative one. The oral examination of this study showed that, the caries prevalence was 60.35% is too high and the prevalence of missing teeth was 24.25%. The mean±SD of DMFT index is high 6.59±4.33, indicating the oral condition is very poor. The 31 % CPITN index> 2 means need treatment badly. The low filling number , but higher CP1TN index of males, indicates that their oral condition are bad. The low caries number, high filling number, and low CPITN index indicates the oral condition of students of the medical university is better than the other two university. In terms of departments, the low caries number and CPITN index showed that the oral condition of dental students are better than the others. Those who check up every half year routinely has lower caries number, higher filling number, and lower CPITN index and are better oral condition than those who did not have routine check up. This implied the importance of routine oral health check up. The university students' oral hygiene knowledge are fair but their attitude are not aggressive. 1heir knowledge did not make them to have good oral habits. There are over80% of students agree that the oral hygiene information should be one of their general education courses. There are highly willing to elect this Course. Therefore, if is necessary to develop a oral hygiene educational program for the university students.
