For people with physical disabilities, maintaining exercise habits is recommended to prevent possible joint contracture and reduced cardiopulmonary endurance. Boccia is a sport suitable for people with moderate to severe physical disabilities. Since 1987, it has been included as an official sport at the Paralympic Games. In recent years, the number of participants in Taiwan has increased, but few studies in the literature have investigated the appropriate training for this sport. The purpose of this article is to conduct a literature review to summarize the factors that affect boccia ball throwing from a biomechanical point of view and to propose further strategies. The results show that the 2 major aspects that affect the throwing movements of people with physical disabilities are upper limb manipulation and stabilization abilities. Factors such as muscle tone, muscle strength, and joint range of motion can also affect the throwing performance of people with physical disabilities. The Gross Motor Function Classification System is used in this article to illustrate the appropriate assessment methods for people with varying degrees of physical disabilities. A training model suitable for participants in boccia is derived from aerobic exercise, muscle strength training, and stretching exercise. At the same time, suggestions for addressing muscle tone problems and related considerations during training are provided. This article can offer boccia coaches and participants a recommendation guideline for optimizing sports performance.
