Chao Yi (1727~1814) enjoy the reputation of being a great poem of his times, just as his contemporaries Yuan Mei and Chiang Shih-chuang did .However, scholars of later generations were more interested in his achievements in historiography .Even though certain researches on Chao Vi's theories of poetics had been made, still, all of them were confined to "Ou Pei Shih Hua." Many of Chao Yi's poems on poetics, in which he made many proposition with regard to regard to theories of poetics, in which he made many propositions with regard to theories of poetics, were thus ignored. Scholars devoted to the study of the poetic school of spirituality mainly focused their research on the works of Yuan Mei, and viewed Chao Vi's as a vassal of Yuan Mei's. This paper, on the contrary, will chiefly discuss Chao Vi's poems on poetics with reference to "Ou Pei Shih Hua" to find out the differences between Chao Vi's propositions on poetics and Yuan Mei's theory of spirituality.
