EFFICACY OF VITAMIN D FOR MODERATE OR SEVERE DEPRESS ION: SYSTEMATIC REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS

Background: Previous studies have identified potential benefits of vitamin D for depression; however, controversial results still exist. Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the potential benefits of vitamin D for depression by a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Studies were retrieved from PubMed and Chinese Electronic Periodical Services using preset keyword searches. Three randomized controlled trials were included. Assessment of risk of bias used the Cochrane collaboration checklist for RCT. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3. Mean and standard deviation of the Beck Depression Inventory scores were taken as indexes of efficacy. Results: Vitamin D supplements effectively improve depressive syndromes. The effect size among these randomized controlled trials was -0.40 (95% CI: -0.69, -0.11). Conclusions: W e found a significant difference in the efficacy of vitamin D for depression. However, it is concluded that before widely using vitamin D, a large randomized controlled trial is warranted to study the safety of vitamin D.
