Wandering is a common problem for elders with cognitive impairment, whether they are at home or in long-term care facilities. Improper care and management may worsen the elders' frustration and raise safety concern, as well as increase frustration and burdens of the caregivers. This article mainly introduces the wandering behaviors of long-term care residents, their causes and the possible negative impacts. This article also discusses some interventions, including assessment, environmental management, physical and psychological interventions, as well as caregiver's educational training. These interventions are expected to reinforce the observatory ability of the nursing aides in the institutions to prevent or deal with the negative impacts of wandering behaviors. The article also discusses strategies to prevent the elders from wandering and gives suggestions on improving their quality of life.
