While the demand of long-term care facility has increased in Taiwan, the residents' physical, mental, social and cognitive functions decrease due to locks of activities. The aim of this study was to examine whether the increase of resident's activities may increase their social interaction and cognitive function. It may further help to maintain their physical and mental function. In this study, ten residents participated in the horticultural program, including four activities, i.e., pots changing, planting, cropping and commemorating between July 9 and August 6, 2008. We consulted and modified the evaluation table for horticulture therapy which was developed by Tseng to assess the physical and mental function change of participants, in addition to qualitative observation. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test results showed that posttest score derived from the evaluation table was significantly greater than pretest score, with the exception of the physical function dimension. Qualitative observation also showed that the residents have improved in their volume of activity, social interests, achievement feeling and cognition. It implied that the therapeutic value of our horticulture program and other relevant activities were able to enhance their physical and mental functions.
