The purpose of this study was to understand the correlation between the use of social media (Facebook, LINE, Instagram) and leisure participation for junior high school students. A stratified proportional sampling was used to survey the junior high school students in Yunlin County with a self-filling structured questionnaire. A total of 216 valid questionnaires were used. SPSS 23.0 was used to perform descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The results indicated that the usage rates of the three social media were Facebook, 95.8%; LINE, 75.0% and Instagram, 77.3%. The scores of various types of leisure participation activities in order were entertainment, network, physical, social, and artistic.Tthe scores of various types of leisure participation behaviors were objective participation, autonomous participation and social participation. The use of Facebook, LINE, Instagram and social media cumulative usage were significantly different from the scores of different aspects of leisure participation. Background variables and social media usage were the predictors of leisure participation which could explain 39% of the variance in leisure participation activities and 36% of the variance in leisure participation behaviors. In conclusions, most students prefer static or indoor activities. It is recommended that cross-disciplinary courses can be designed to combine entertainment and network activities that students like with physical and artistic activities that students rarely participate in. Meanwhile educators can use social media to deliver the health education content that students must pay attention to in leisure activities.
