Parking for bicycles at mass rapid transit (MRT) stations has become a new transportation problem in Taipei. The problem resulted from insufficient off-street parking spaces provided for bicycles within station sites. Bicyclists thus illegally stalled their bicycles on sidewalks around the station areas, which reduces the limited spaces for pedestrian moements, deteriorates service quality of streets, and even discourages people's willingness to ride bicycles. The objectives of this research are to identify factors affecting bicycle-parking demand at transit stations, and to establish a mathematical relationship between parking demand and the attributing factors. Bicycle parking demands at 60 MRT stations were counted. The characteristics of bicycle riders were investigated and parking activities were examined. Factors affecting bicycle parking demands at MRT stations were identified and analyzed. Five quantifiable independent variables of MRT stations were selected. They were number of peak-hour entrants, number of bus routes, employment density of areas within 500-meter radius, number of employees and students of neighboring areas, and ratio of sloping areas to total areas. Regression analysis was adopted and a model was established. Finally, this model was applied to Nei-Hu line of Taipei MRT system to demonstrate its applicability.
