& Trappe emend. Walker & Koske (Gf),G. mosseae (Nicol. & Gerd.)
Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is one of the most important crops due to its nutritional value and medicinal purpose. It is historically treated as an medical herb for health in Chinese and has gained increasing attention in Taiwan during the recent decade. The symbiotic association between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and root of plants is widespread in the natural environment. Two yam species, D. alata L. var. purea (Roxb.) M. and D. opposita Thunb were inoculated with six species of AMF, such as Glomus clarum Schenck & Smith (Gc), G. etunicatum Becker & Gerdemann (Ge), G. fasciculatum (Thaxter) Gerd. & Trappe emend. Walker & Koske (Gf), G. mosseae (Nicol. & Gerd.) Gerdemann & Trappe (Gm), Gigaspora sp (Gg) and Acaulospora sp (Asp) for evaluate their effect on the plant growth and development of yam. Results showed that inoculation with Gc, Ge, Gm and Asp improved the stem diameter and the development of leaves. Gc, Ge and Gf can promoted the content of soluble carbohydrate in leaves, in addition Gf and Asp were able to increase the soluble protein in leaves of yam. It has the potential in yam production and can be used as microbial fertilizer.
