Bitter gourd, sponge gourd and pumpkin are Cucurbits, which had strong affinity and high living grafting percentage. In this study, two varieties of bitter gourd scions grafted onto a luffa or squash through cleft grafting. The shoots of scions were shortened by grafted. The content of xylem sap from the luffa rootstock showed great compared to that from the pumpkin. The diameter ratio of scion stem / rootstock stem of the pumpkin rootstock was significantly decreased. The plant fresh weight and dry weight of 'Fen Ching' bitter gourd were significantly decreased after grafting, and of 'Luxuriance' bitter gourds were not significantly affected. The water potential and photosynthesis of the leaf were not significantly different between the grafted and un-grafted bitter melon.
