Objective: This study examined the present condition of inter-hospital transfer regulations in effect for emergency departments (EDs) of general hospital in Taiwan. Methods: We investigated transferring doctors and emergency patients/families who transferred into two hospitals from other hospitals/clinics by conducting telephone interviews and using a self-administered questionnaire with the receiving doctors. Results: There were 79 transferred patients for a 0.59% transfer rate. The major transfer reason was because of a patient/family request. More than a half of the arranging transfer doctors. who were interviewed were aware of the transfer regulations of the authorities. In the meantime, irregardless of whether the arranging doctor knew of the regulation or not, they all provided the transfer sheet/note to the transferred patients. Conclusion: The relative authorities need to pay more attention to making information available on and 19 primary care doctors about transfer regulations in order to improve the transfer system quality.
