A Potential Integrated Framework between Urban Morphology and Space Syntax Approach in Design Control

本研究介紹都市形態學方法和空間語構學的技術，及探討在歷史城鎮的運用並詮釋這些理論與方法的起源，測試兩者差異後並探討如何建立整合性架構。本文包括主要四部分：第一部分介紹都市設計理論發展以及規劃和建築研究領域中關鍵性的論述，及這些理論如何構成目前設計理論操作工具。第二部分詮釋空間語構及形態學的細節以及如何運用在都市設計及設計管制，再根據前段所提到的理論及操作上的限制及優點，提出了這兩者改善整合成更好的整合架構。第三部分利用這個整合架構在實際計劃中進行分析以及運用，其中包含了義大利、西班牙和英國的歷史城鎮。也討論這些城鎮面對現代化和新開發的各種議題。在結論中比較兩種不同方法在理論及操作的議題，這部分的結論也廣泛的從不同的角度討論了這些工具特性。也透的整合架構來評估原來分析的結果，同時利用不同工具整合出更好的操作架構。

This study introduces urban morphological approach, Space Syntax technique and their applications in historical towns; and also includes the origins of these approaches. The potential to establish and integrated framework between both was discussed after the test for both approaches. There are four parts in this paper. The first part explains the development of urban design theory by introducing selected key planning and architectural studies and ideas which contributed urban design theories and built today’s operational instruments. The second part has some key details from Space Syntax and urban morphology, these two approaches, and their applications in urban design and design control. Based on the limitations and advantages of their theoretical background (in part1), a potential better integrated framework is purposed. The third part explains this integrated framework and how it applied in some projects in small historical towns of Italy, Spain, and England where the challenges and issues from modernization and new developments are confronted. In the conclusion, by comparing theoretical and practical issues of these two approaches in various aspects, to discuss their characteristics. To evaluate and compare the analysis results from this integrated framework and their original tools, it can prove the value of this study and new framework.
