Insulin injection is an effective treatment for Type 2 diabetes management. In Taiwan, the insulin injection proportion was 16.9% among patients with Type 2 diabetes. The proportion was only 14.4% (362/2511) in our hospital. Present status investigation found that the patient's knowledge, skills, and psycho-social factors were the factors leading to the lower insulin injection proportion. The aim of this project was to increase the insulin injection proportion to 16.9% for Type 2 diabetes patients. We invited Type 2 diabetes patients who were with A1C>7% in two successive measurements in the last 6 months and did not use insulin as their diabetes treatment from the outpatient department of metabolism to join our programme. From 2011/11/01 to 2012/04/30, we held symposium biweekly. The contents included written and video teaching materials, role play, skill demonstration, and discussion. Caring telephone calls were also provided several times during the programme period. The results showed that the number of patients received insulin injection increased from 362 to 432, with an injection proportion 17.2%. This project successfully enhanced the injection proportion. It demonstrated the unique features of the nursing.
