The purpose of this study was to understand the level of burnout, sleep quality, job satisfaction and factors that influence job satisfaction among school nurses. A cross-sectional study design with 292 nurses from public elementary and junior high schools of New Taipei City in Taiwan was used. There were 212 valid questionnaires returned, and the valid response rate was 72.6%. Instruments used included Chinese version of Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, Chinese version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Chinese version of Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. The highest score for burnout was over-commitment, with an average of 47.92 points (standard deviation = 16.48 points). The lowest score for burnout was client-related burnout, with an average of 32.47 points (standard deviation = 16.25 points). The mean sleep quality was 6.19 (standard deviation = 3.05 points). The mean job satisfaction was 74.34 (standard deviation = 8.87 points). The predictive factors affecting the job satisfaction of school nurses were work-related burnout, years of service, client-related burnout and over-commitment, which explained 34% of variance in job satisfaction. Health and education policy makers should strengthen the professional role of school nurses, strengthen the counselling of new school nurses, and reduce workplace burnout, thereby increasing the level of job satisfaction.
