Background: Evidence-based health care (EBHC) integrates the best evidence, professional experience, and patient preferences to improve the quality of care. Relevant studies investigating the knowledge and application of EBHC among clinical nursing staff have been published in past years. However, there is a lack of research on nursing graduates' competency and readiness for EBHC. Aims: This study aims to (1) understand the situation of EBHC curriculum offered in nursing schools in Taiwan, and (2) explore the nursing fresh graduates' competency and readiness for EBHC. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with an online questionnaire. The data collection included basic characteristics, school-based EBHC course offerings, the competency of EBHC, and readiness of nursing graduates in the 109 academic years. Data were analyzed by IBM® SPSS® for Mac 25.0 statistical software for descriptive and correlational statistics. Results: Those in public schools, those who had taken an EBHC course in school, those who had a clinical practicum course integrated EBHC applications, and those who knew that "evidence-based health care competency" were included in the clinical nursing ladder system rated themselves as having higher evidence-based health care competency (t = 3.370, t = 3.336, t = 3.284, t = 2.300, all p < 0.05), and the overall model explanation was 12.9% (F = 7.665, p < 0.001). Additionally, fresh nursing graduates from public schools and those who had taken an evidence-based nursing course rated themselves as more readiness for EBN (t = 2.716, t = 3.218, all p < 0.05), with an overall model explanation of 9.0% (F = 9.817, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Nursing graduates who had taken an EBN course during their school years rated themselves as having better EBHC competence and readiness. It is recommended that EBHC curriculum be included as a required course in nursing education and integrated with clinical practicum, so that nurses with EBHC competency can be nurtured early and connect to the clinical nursing ladder system smoothly.
