Comparison the Effects of Dynamic Tape and Kinesio Tape to Balance and Functional Performance in Patients With Chronic Ankle Instability

Background and Purpose: Patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) often suffer from repeated ankle sprain, affecting exercise performance and placing them at risk for further sport injuries. Various ankle taping methods have been used to prevent ankle injury and increase exercise performance in individuals with CAI. However, differences in their clinical effectiveness are still topics of discussion. The present study aims to evaluate the difference between the affected (CAI) and sound leg regarding balance and functional performance, and evaluate the effectiveness of dynamic and kinesio taping in patients with CAI. Methods: This is a randomized controlled trial in which static and dynamic balances were evaluated respectively by postural stability index and limit of stability, and functional performance evaluated by side hop test in both the CAI leg and normal leg in all participants. The subjects were then randomly assigned to either the dynamic or kinesio taping group. The CAI leg was reassessed after a single taping intervention to compare the effects of the two kinds of taping methods. Results: The CAI leg showed significant deficiency in balance and functional performance compared with the sound leg. Dynamic taping resulted in better balance and functional performance compared with kinesio taping in individuals with CAI. Conclusion: Dynamic balance and functional performance were significantly decreased in patients with CAI and dynamic taping was more effective than kinesio taping in improving said deficits.
