The purpose of this study was to measure the exercise intensity of basketball players in official games using 3-axis accelerometer, a wearable device. Players from Taiwan men's basketball team, who participated in 2017 University Basketball Association (UBA) division I, were recruited for this study. Data were collected from 14 participants (4 guards, 5 forwards, and 5 centers) in seven quarterfinal games. The obtained data were analyzed to compare the differences in exercise intensity at different positions, roles, and quarters, and also between the teams with a 10-point variation in a single quarter. The results indicated that (1) the exercise intensity of guards was significantly higher than that of the forwards and centers, while no significant difference in exercise intensity was observed between forwards and centers. (2) Exercise intensity was not significantly different between starters and bench players in the seven quarterfinal games. (3) The exercise intensity in the first and third quarters was significantly higher than those in the second and fourth quarters. (4) When the team was 10 points (or more) behind, the average exercise intensity in such quarter was significantly higher than the team that was ahead of 10 points (or more). We conclude that accelerometer is able to distinguish the exercise intensity of players at different positions during real basketball competition. Wearable devices like accelerometer could have practical applications for coaches to monitor the physical load of players, to establish game strategies, and to determine timing of player rotations.
