Isometric resistance exercise (IM) and isotonic resistance exercise (IT) both can improve muscle mass and muscle strength. Moreover, resistance exercise is beneficial in regulating the blood pressure and arteriosclerosis index (pulse wave velocity, PWV). However, the influence of IM and IT trainings on PWV and blood pressure were not determined yet. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of equal exercise loads of IT or IM on alterations of PWV and blood pressure in healthy male adults. Twenty-eight participants were randomly assigned into IM group (n = 14) and IT group (n = 14). Participants were performed the resistance exercise, including 75% of maximum voluntary isometric contraction and 75% of 1 repetition maximum. Blood pressure and finger-toe PWV (ftPWV) were measured at pre-exercise (rest), 0 min (T0), 15 min (T15), 30 min (T30), 45 min (T45), 60 min (T60), and 24 h (T24H) after exercise. Results showed that ftPWV values at T0 post-resistance exercise were significantly higher than those at rest in both IM and IT groups. In addition, ftPWV at T45 in IM group was significantly lower than that of IT group at T45. In the IM group, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) at T45 were significantly lower than those at rest. Both groups had significantly increased heart rate and SBP from rest to T0 post-resistance exercise. Our findings conclude that ftPWV, SBP, and MAP were significantly reduced at T45 in healthy adults after performing lower-limb IM. Exercise in our study appears to decrease the risk of arterial stiffness and produce post-exercise hypotension to improve vascular function in adults.
