Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, Second Edition, Long Form(BOT-2-LF)動作能力測驗。
Haptic perception, the integration of touch and proprioception of the somatosensory system, is defined as an individual's ability to detect objects' surface, shape, and size by actively touching them with the hands. Haptic perception plays an important role in motor development and motor control. Previous studies have indicated that regular musical training is associated with better haptic perception. However, the relationships between haptic and motor functions in musicians are unclear. The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate the relationship between haptic perception (i.e., haptic acuity and sensitivity) and motor skills of different aspects in young adults with and without musical experiences. This study recruited 22 musicians and 22 control participants. All participants performed two haptic perception tasks and a standardized motor assessment: Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, Second Edition, Long Form (BOT-2-LF). For the haptic detection task, participants touched a set of curvature blocks with the index finger of their dominant hand and indicated which block was more curved. For the haptic discrimination task, participants determined which of the two blocks had the higher curvature. Haptic detection and discrimination thresholds were obtained to measure haptic sensitivity and acuity. The results revealed that in terms of haptic sensitivity, the haptic detection thresholds in musicians were significantly lower than in controls. Haptic discrimination thresholds were not significantly different between the two groups. Results from correlation analysis showed that haptic detection thresholds were significantly correlated with BOT-2 manual coordination among all participants. In conclusion, this study confirms that musicians have higher haptic sensitivity levels than did the controls. Furthermore, adults with higher levels of haptic sensitivity tend to show greater levels of manual coordination.
